FISHING THE Kingsbridge estuary

The Kingsbridge estuary and it’s many creeks is a haven for wildlife, especially sea birds. One of the reasons for this is that below the water surface is an abundance of fish, including our friends the bass, mullet, and gilthead bream, all of whom travel up to the saltwater creeks to breed.

We offer TWO TYPES OF lure fishing trip, ONE FOR BEGINNERS, and aNOTHER FOR more advanced FISHERMEN.

  1. Learn to Lure Fish

This is a fun trip designed to introduce absolute beginners to lure fishing, or help intermediate fishermen improve their casting and retrieving.

We go out for 2.5 hours (departing Kingsbridge or Salcombe - check with us as depends on tides), heading to a part of the estuary that will give us the best chance of a fish, and also offer us the best protection from any poor weather conditions we might encounter.

All tuition, fishing and safety equipment is provided, and some of the skills and techniques you will learn are as follows:


Tackle - quick run through on rods and reels, and how to get tackled up so you can go and do this yourself on your own.

Knots - learn one or two useful knots that might stay with you for the rest of your fishing life, especially involving braid.!

Lures - we will teach you the difference between the main types of lures we use (soft-plastics, metals, poppers etc), and what parts of the water column they target.

Casting - learn to cast accurately and effortlessly, and most importantly, consistently, without getting into a tangle!

Retrieving - this is probably the most important skill of lure fishing, learning how to retrieve your lures in such a way that will attract the fish. This will include learning about constant tension, cranking, walking the dog, jigging, and slow retrieves.

Please note these trips are 100% catch and release. All fish caught inside the harbour limits must be returned.

2. DRIFT FISHING FOR BASS

For those looking for the thrill of chasing bass amid the wild beauty of the Kingsbridge Estuary and Salcombe Harbour, this could be the trip for them! This is a 3 or 4-hour fishing adventure (let us know your preference), seeking out the fish, and enjoying the scenery.

We go out for around 4 hours, (departing Kingsbridge or Salcombe - check with us as tide dependant) and usually working with the tide, head up to the most scenic parts of the estuary, or out towards the harbour entrance between Starehole Bay and Sunny Cove.

We will fish mainly for Bass, but may well catch Wrasse, Pollack, Mackerel, and even Garfish. If time allows us we may stop off for a coffee on a beach (we might even cook you a BBQ bacon roll if you’re hungry!).

We will be covering all depths of water using lure rods and fly rods, and you are welcome to bring your own gear. Also please feel free to bring your own food and beverages (in max one kit bag). If you’d like to go out longer than 4 hours and include a pit stop at say The Millbrook Inn, or be dropped off at The Crabshell when we finish, all can be arranged, just let us know what you’d like to achieve!

All tuition, fishing and safety equipment is provided. Please note if you are more than 2 people, you will have to share the fishing (Max 4 passengers - 3 adults or 2 adults + 2 kids), max 2 fishing at the same time).

We do not take passengers in rough conditions.

If the weather is wet and windy there is usually somewhere we can go and fish that is sheltered, in and around the mouth of Salcombe Estuary and Bolthead, we just recommend wearing the correct clothing! But if the weather is really awful then we may have to cancel all trips, and try and move your booking to a different date.
